KRUSOE GIVE UP THE COAST

For the title of Krusoe’s third release, this Oxford songwriter plays on the saying “give up the ghost”, which originally was used as an alternative for ‘to die’. However, Krusoe doesn’t use this in such morbid or literal manner here, as he states ‘Give Up The Coast’ is "essentially about being stuck in your old ways and the overpowering, intoxicating impact of memories and lovers in old haunts in my home town." Influenced by a myriad of styles, including hip-hop beats and indie-folk melodies, Krusoe creates an overwhelming atmosphere. Listening closely, you can pick out a banjo-esque strum, dainty piano flourishes, waves of synths including a haunting, warped whine, a suggestion of tambourine and echoing electric guitar notes. Of course, one consistent thread through all of this is Krusoe’s soaring, well-controlled vocals, something which he has used to his advantage touring throughout Europe as a classically trained singer. His voice flies through the song as he confronts “living in a ghost town”. For anyone who has experienced that claustrophobic environment, whether in returning to your hometown or through rigorous training, as that demanded of classical musicians, then you’ll probably relate to this song. - HT
